Cotton and polyester Jacquard weavings, dye sublimated fabric, and light
80x180 in
COMMODITY MANIFESTO is an installation responding to the bizarre reality of American contemporary consumerism. COMMODITY MANIFESTO inquires about issues of overconsumption, advertising, and pop culture.
The installation is a pieced fabric from 15 jacquard weavings and dye sublimated fabrics. The weavings are digital collages of scanned text and images from magazines and packaging materials, surrealist writing, python generated text, pixilated Jacquard TC2 files, video stills, and photographs. The fabrics are images of digital collages dye sublimated on polyester cloth. The pieced fabric is overlayed with a video.
This piece engages with the material history of jacquard weaving with hyper interplay of light. Through this intersection of slow craft and digital image, this piece preserves weaving and digital histories, as well as dialogue between woven and digital text, and takes advantages of these histories’ strengths to appropriately question consumerism.
